brown paper & grey linen

all things imperfect, quirky, and authentic...

birds of a feather...

i've been enamored with peacocks for several years now... i'm not sure why i love them or why they speak to me, but chances are that i have some deep desire be noticed.

or maybe i just love flannery o'connor. in fact, every time i pick up this collection of her short stories i'm floored by her perfect use of language and the moral lessons her tales convey. a devout southern catholic, o'connor said of the south (my stomping grounds)
"
I doubt if the texture of Southern life is any more grotesque than that of the rest of the nation, but it does seem evident that the Southern writer is particularly adept at recognizing the grotesque; and to recognize the grotesque, you have to have some notion of what is not grotesque and why."

her stories are certainly filled with elements of the grotesque, but somehow even though they often end in pain, there are moments of beauty and redemption. one of her mostly widely read stories, "Revelation" juxtaposes a proud country woman with the peacocks and pigs she raises...

with this in mind, i urge you to 1) go read some flannery o'connor, 2) go hear some of her personal letters just made public being read next week on Emory University's campus next week, and 3) I pay homage to ms. o'connor with today's post...

i was poking around michelle brusegaard's etsy shop and came across some really fun stationary. i loved these notecards not only because they pay homage to my favorite fowl but also because they're printed on brown paper...

this month's domino magazine mentions that the european ferm living is now making their wallpaper and wall stickers available in the us. this is great news folks! the stickers are perfect for those of us who change our minds (and our addresses) often. on top of this, their wallpaper designs are lovely. i was especially attracted to this peacock one. it's so bold that you don't even need artwork...

lastly, i wanted to share this abstracted peacock ultrasuede pillow. although it's way out of my price range, it would certainly be an everyday reminder to keep our own pride in check... to see more of michele varian's designs click here.
